Nevertheless, We Persisted
Despite Shifting Priorities and Obstacles
Good riding weather happens to coincide with good construction weather, and this year, the construction of our carriage house has taken priority over getting the bikes out. So when the weekends were clear and dry, when in any other year we’d be riding or moto-camping, we opted to work on our massive DIY project. As the building is mostly dried in and the exterior completed, we are anticipating a couple of trips this fall, including our annual pilgrimage to Barber.
As I look back over the year, there are a few riding highlights, however, starting with the alligator snapping turtle incident.
In March, we got the bikes ready for the season…

…took one Sunday ride two-up on the BMW wherein Mark moved an alligator snapping turtle from the middle of the road to a nearby ditch…

…before we faced another obstacle, my appendix requesting removal in April, which kept me off bikes for 6 weeks…
Finally, in August we did one of our day rides to Willisburg, KY, where we made our pit stop at the Corner Market before heading home.

And then, we could not argue with some gorgeous weather this first Sunday in September, so we visited our friend Dave in Bardstown, stopping to rest and snack before and after.

It felt great to be on the road! I particularly love how relaxed it is being a passenger and letting my mind wander. Good for a poet! Speaking of which, another project that’s been in the works this year is my book of poems, which will be published early next year by Finishing Line Press. Not as motorcycle-heavy thematically as my previous collection, but still kind of sassy and hopefully relatable.
More news on that in the future, and hopefully some finished pics of the carriage house soon. It will be amazing to have all the bikes under one big beautiful roof in our backyard.

Being a passenger is SO great for thinking! Once I get my license and can ride on my own, I feel like I'll miss that aspect of riding.
